After proposal approvals are made, the Office of Study Abroad staff and Program Directors and their academic units including department chairs, staff, and deans, collaborate on developing the programs’ on-site components. Program development encompasses both the group activities directly related to the academic and inter-cultural objectives and the logistics. Marketing also begins at this time with initial program information included on the Office of Study Abroad’s website, helping to get the word out to students early to aid with their long-term planning.
During the program development phase on UMAIE-sponsored programs, Program Directors work directly with Seminars International to make all necessary on-site arrangements. On all other short-term programs, the Office of Study Abroad consults with Program Directors as they select program providers, confirm inclusions, review contracts, and submit requests for payments to them. Using quotes obtained from these program provides, Program Directors then assemble program budgets from which students’ program fees are calculated. Before these fees can be advertised, budgets must be approved by the Program Directors’ chairs and deans or their designees, and usually also by the Office of Academic Affairs.
