Program Directors traveling to international sites will receive international health insurance coverage through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). CISI functions as primary health insurance while enrollees are overseas and covers medical evacuation and repatriation as well as security evacuations. The CISI plan will pay 100% of covered expenses without requiring a deductible. More information is available on the CISI brochure.

Additionally, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota coverage through St. Thomas remains effective abroad. As with most U.S. policies, the insured individual pays for the medical services received on-site and then files a claim to seek reimbursement. Cash-less access to care might be available in some countries. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota members may call collect to (804) 673-1177 at any time from any domestic or international destination for advice on how to proceed in obtaining care at their off-campus program locations.

Another resource for University employees’ medical needs, whether in the U.S. or abroad, is Assist America. Assist America is not insurance, but rather a worldwide emergency medical assistance service that can provide help accessing 24-hour multilingual service, obtaining a prescription, lost luggage assistance, etc. Employees must carry an Assist America card with the phone number and St. Thomas reference number on it to use this service.

Program Directors are covered by St. Thomas for bodily injury and property damage to others. Program Directors must make themselves and St. Thomas aware of any and all unusual or difficult legal requirements in foreign countries, especially regarding vehicles, alcohol use, and property damage laws, and make sure current legal information is obtained prior to departure. Accompanying persons (non-St. Thomas employees) are not covered by this insurance, and will be asked to sign documents indemnifying St. Thomas before departure.

St. Thomas insurance does not cover the damage or loss of personal possessions of either Program Directors or students. Program Directors need to make their own insurance arrangements for replacing items such as electronics, computers, cameras, baggage, etc., if they are damaged, lost, or stolen, and should check their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies.
