Program Description:

UST: Virtual Business 200

Add an international component to your Business 200 experience! Through a new partnership with AIFS, we are able to offer a limited number of virtual volunteer opportunities with British organizations.

Through this virtual volunteer experience, you can add an international component to your resume, learn about a different cultural and business context, and gain valuable experience working across cultures and across time zones – required skills in today’s global workplace.

Potential placements include:

  • Age UK: You would work in administrative capacities, helping with fundraising work and organizing Zoom activities for the country’s largest charity dedicated to providing resources for senior citizens, addressing issues of poverty, isolation, and neglect.
  • Haven House: You would work primarily in primarily administrative and fundraising tasks for Haven House, an organization that supports hundreds of families each year who are providing hospice care for children and young people.
  • Conservation Volunteers: You would work in primarily administrative and fundraising tasks for Lavender Pond Nature Park, a wildlife haven and learning center.
  • The Jesus Centre: You would work in general office administration, database maintenance and fundraising for the Jesus Centre, an organization that provides holistic resources to those experiencing homelessness or vulnerable housing.
In addition to your volunteer experience, this program requires participation in a Canvas learning community with three synchronous lectures by British faculty, introducing you to key aspects of British work culture. Dates and times for these lectures will be announced in the fall. Lecture topics include:

  • general introduction to British culture, exploring issues of identity and unity within the U.K.
  • a discussion about the relationship between Britain and the U.S.
  • an in-depth look at the British education system
  • the U.K. value system and how it operates in the workplace
The program fee for this new program is $675. This fee will cover the placement as well as work of our on-site partner (AIFS) to help ensure the quality of the placement and offer lectures by on-site faculty to provide valuable cultural context.

Placements will be made on a rolling basis, and there are 10 total placements available for Summer 2021. Applications will be accepted until May 9th or until all placement spots have been filled.
