Program Description:
The Opus College of Business is excited to bring a unique opportunity for MBA students to fulfill their global study requirement. We are pleased to offer MGMT 714: Doing Business in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland - a virtual study abroad class that students can take from the convenience of their home.

If you are a curious individual who is excited to participate in a week-long, knowledge-packed, immersive global experience and learn about the challenges and opportunities today’s complex global business world presents, then this class is for you. What’s more, taking this class allows you to earn three credits toward your degree within a short span of one week.

The German-speaking business world includes not only Germany but also Austria, Switzerland, and the semi-autonomous region in the north of Italy known as the Südtirol. Many companies in these regions are engaged on a worldwide scale in industries ranging from agriculture to medical devices. Considering that many of these companies are headquartered or have subsidiaries in the Twin Cities (e.g., 3M, Boston Scientific, Würth), as global business leaders, we must possess a deep understanding of how these businesses work collaboratively with partners around the globe to deliver innovative, world-class products and services to international customers.

This short-term virtual study abroad class provides you with that learning experience. This class is a deeply immersive and interactive academic experience that allows you to interact with business leaders from several German-speaking regions within a span of a week and learn first-hand how companies in these regions collaborate, innovate, and contribute to sustainability.

This class is different in that it is designed to focus on businesses that share a language rather than on a single country. Thus, we will (virtually) visit four different German-speaking regions during the class in order to better understand the similarities of and differences between the business and local culture of each region. You will walk away from each day with a renewed understanding of a different German-speaking region and the keys to success in that region through a variety of carefully crafted activities such as company visits, entrepreneurial labs, case studies, and various embedded cultural engagements.

Course Objectives:
This week-long immersive experience will allow students to:
  • Learn how businesses in German-speaking regions collaborate with both domestic and international partners to deliver innovative and sustainable products and services
  • Appreciate the uniqueness of, as well as similarities between, different German-speaking regions and the impact of these differences/similarities on the business culture of these regions
  • Have a renewed understanding of what it means to be a global business leader
